Print screening your iPhone

People complain that the iPhone doesn’t have a copy and paste text capability. I imagine this is a user interface design issue that Apple has been sitting on the fence with for a while.

This will sound crazy but… there actually is a copy/paste function in the iPhone, only it’s not for text specifically. It works for images, effectively print screens of your iPhone’s display. To demonstrate I’ve “print screened” a photo album of comic pages I’ve tried dropping on the iPhone. Unfortunately the iPhone auto compresses images to an uncontrollable degree and hence the comic panels are difficult to read (I’m working on a way around this.)

Furthermore I’ll use the screen capping to show you how you can check your 3G cellular usage in the Settings area of the iPhone:

And your “Cellular Network Data” is shown at the bottom. Not too shabby!

How do you print screen the iPhone you ask? Click the home and the off keys simultaneously. In other words, the front face button below the screen and the button on top of the iPhone to the right.

The screen will flash white and you’ll have captured your current display!

This is an effective alternative to sending a person someone’s contact details. Unfortunately since the iPhone doesn’t support rich SMSs via MMS you can only email this image data. Cool stuff nonetheless!
